Helping Agile Projects Succeed Through Business Analysis

Helping Agile Projects Succeed Through Business Analysis News

Business Change Academy’s new Agile Business Analysis course is bringing much-needed context in helping Agile projects succeed through business analysis.

The Agile way of working is becoming ever more popular in today’s business, due to an iterative and incremental framework that allows for adaptive business requirements and adoptive product change. It’s a smart way to work, and so it makes sense for you, the business analyst, to get to grips with how you can contribute to the success of Agile development projects.

And this training course will help you do exactly that.

Based on a real-life case study, you’ll leverage your existing business analysis knowledge and techniques to practise applying the Agile approach within a business analysis scenario. You’ll come away with a real understanding of how business analysis is applied within the context of the Agile philosophy.

Plus you’ll not only explore the philosophy behind Agile, but how to apply the methods and techniques used within the business and the principles that guide this Agile way of working within the business analysis approach

Presented to you by Joe Newbert, who brings his substantial experience of training in business analysis and change, this intensive 3-day BCS Professional Certificate in Agile Business Analysis training course will develop your knowledge, skills, and abilities to support business change programmes within your organisation successfully.

According to Joe,

“Today, it is essential to possess a blend of both traditional and agile and business analysis skills. with the lack of business analysis thinking on Agile projects often leading to unforeseen and negative consequences during the implementation of software products and solutions. Effective business analysis can help ensure the success of Agile projects.”

Over the last ten years, or so, the ‘Agile Business Analyst’ has become a much-used but often misunderstood role. An Agile Business Analyst is someone who applies the professional discipline of business analysis, but who also applies the principles and values of agile to their business analysis work. And it’s with this solid foundation and context of business analysis, together, that greater success with your Agile projects can be achieved.

The Professional Certificate in Agile Business Analysis is relevant for anyone wishing to understand the Agile approach from a business perspective, and how they can support effective business analysis. This includes business analysts, product owners, scrum masters, project managers, business managers, and their team members.

With over 100,000 professionals worldwide certified with BCS, the International Diploma in Business Analysis is popularly regarded as the de facto industry qualification that truly demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities of an effective business analyst, and during October 2018 10 new delegates began this learning journey with Business Change Academy.

“The acronyms are not just ‘buzzwords’ anymore! The focused and practical content helped me to see the value and application of techniques for the strategic analysis of business,” remarked Lana Woollgar.

The courses are being rated favourably by all-levels of business analyst, from junior through to senior, due to the rich, contextualised training experience offered by Business Change Academy. In fact the value gained is regularly evident in their delegates many success stories, with people routinely commending the combination of rich content, skilled facilitation and practical insights they leave with.

According to Trevor McCarthy, a business analyst with 10 years of experience, we tend to stick with what we know and what has worked in the past, but the course challenged him to think differently about engaging stakeholders during the requirements phase. This was echoed by Thabisile Zikalala, who, as someone new to the role, said seeing how the whole process fits together was her biggest learning, and that she now understands how to carry out her job in a way that adds much more value.

Connecting Business Analysis with Project Success

Connecting Business Analysis with Project Success News

In celebration of great project leadership minds coming together, Joe Newbert, Managing Director of Business Change Academy, has been invited to present a keynote address on connecting business analysis with project success at the PMI MENA Conference (Middle East and Northern Africa), taking place in Kuwait and Bahrain on 3rd and 4th November 2018.

Whilst this unique two-day educational programme about how to evolve to deliver “Project leadership through excellence and innovation” provides opportunities to learn, share and expand understanding of various topics discussions with your peers about project management — it goes a step further by introducing the business analysis element to catalyse the symbiosis between the two professions.

Newbert’s talk titled “Busting Project Manager and Business Analyst Silo Mentality” explores the relationship between project managers and business analysts, and considers how these leadership roles can better collaborate to provide the strategic and tactical expertise required by organisations today.

Newbert, in stating the need for role collaboration, explains,

“The challenge is that whilst business analysts and project managers share a common goal and objectives they have different responsibilities within a project, and often hold conflicting, but not mutually exclusive, perspectives. The business analyst focuses outward with the stakeholders to ensure the right solution is built, while the project manager focuses inward to make sure the solution is built right.”

Often the end result is these two essential leadership roles not working collaboratively, and Joe’s talk aims to break down the silo’s to leverage greater efficiencies by highlighting the current role dynamics, future collaboration opportunities and actions that business analysts and project managers must harness to build strong working relationships and drive team cohesion.

“Inaccurate requirements gathering consistently ranks in the top three causes of project failure yet only half of organisations have the resources in place to perform this function properly, and we are delighted to have Joe deliver a keynote session addressing this issue at the PMI MENA conference this year,” says Tarnbir Kaur CAE, Managing Director of PMI UAE.

Conference delegates will understand the past, present and future narratives of industry and organisations to make sense of the rapidly changing world we operate in today and the new definitions and considerations for business and project success.

Giving Business Analysts The Competitive Edge

Giving Business Analysts The Competitive Edge News

Michelle van Kesteren, Operations Manager, attended Business Change Academy’s Business Analysis Practice course with a view to assessing the training course for the business consulting team, and here she shares her experience of how the programme is giving business analysts the competitive edge by steering them to become less of a documenter and more of a thinker.

Coming into the course I was expecting the typical business analysis content to be covered, which in theory is great to know, but in reality one often does not get to actually put into practice what you’ve learnt.

And, admittedly, I came in with a closed mind, thinking, I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, I’ll just come here to observe and assess. But, boy, was I wrong and very pleasantly surprised!,” says Michelle.

Michelle is of the opinion that:

  1. the unfortunate perception of a Business Analyst is of someone who churns out documentation, but that
  2. the real skill that differentiates good business analysts from great business analysts is the way they think about a problem and engage with their stakeholders to truly uncover the root cause, as well as resolve conflicting views.

While writing good documentation is a skill, it can be learnt. But being able to think holistically and conceptually about a problem, and knowing the right questions to ask, is more difficult to teach,” Michelle says.

Which starts to explain what is giving Business Change Academy’s business analysis courses the sharp-edge over its competitors, and why they are fast becoming the training provider of choice for organisations.

The course content is designed to teach business analysis techniques which assist in helping business analysts to really think about the problem, apply their minds and break it down in simple, meaningful, visual ways to really ensure that they are indeed solving the right problem, in collaboration with their stakeholders.

Business Change Academy’s shift from template-driven documentation to technique-driven analysis is wonderfully refreshing, and completely different from what the other training providers are offering,” says Michelle.

Michelle believes the role of the business analyst has evolved significantly over the years. “However, most training providers and more so academic institutions have failed to evolve their content as well. This has left a gap in the industry, and as a result we have more “documenters” than “real thinkers”.

The International Diploma in Business Analysis is the key differentiator for any business analyst looking for relevant, fresh content to give them a competitive edge.

It certainly has the potential to reduce the gap in the industry, and transform the way business analysts think about their role and how they add value to their organisation,” she says.

Michelle has assurance that Business Change Academy is the right training company with the right training programme to up-skill Saratoga’s team of business consultants. Of real significance is the training curriculum delivered by Business Change Academy — one that sets it apart from other offerings in the market.

The content is fresh, it is internationally recognised and the journey to getting the Diploma can be designed by the individual,” she remarks.

As the Business Consulting Operations Manager at Saratoga, Michelle believes it is absolutely critical that their Business Consultants offer a differentiated service and experience to their clients, and she feels assured Business Change Academy are helping them to achieve this.

Taste of Technique Driven Strategic Business Analysis

Taste of Technique Driven Strategic Business Analysis News

With organisations under increasing pressure to remain relevant and competitive in the marketplace, Joe Newbert, Managing Director of Business Change Academy has been invited to present taste of technique driven strategic business analysis at the IIBA Southern Africa BA Summit, taking place Johannesburg from 1st to 3rd October 2018.

This three day conference programme about how organisations, in partnership with the business analysis profession, can embrace change and transform business to realise value provides a platform for all Business Analysts, and the organisations that employ them, to come together to debate and understand how how the business analyst role advises and drives strategy deliver business value, and support strategic business change.

Newbert’s talk titled “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Strategic Business Analysis” will power-through a best practice approach for business analysts on their journey of facilitating strategic business analysis with the end-in-mind of realising business benefits, while introducing definitive go-to tools and techniques that focus on engaging with stakeholders to elicit their real needs.

Presenting at the conference for the sixth straight year, Newbert says

“The problem is that in many organisations a broad strategy is rushed into project tactics, without fully analysing the business change sufficiently beforehand. This haste results in the many over-due, over-budget and under-quality project situations we commonly see today — strategic business analysis is the solution to this gap,” says Newbert.

Often the root cause is that the business project and information technology teams are not working in symphony, and Joe’s talk will showcase a stakeholder-centric method for analysing different perspectives and managing group consensus, as well as proven business analysis techniques to string together towards a persuasive business case.

Conference delegates will learn a holistic model for considering business systems and avoiding the pitfalls of silo-thinking, and a straightforward approach detailing the key steps for delivering a strategic business analysis project.

Launching the BCS International Diploma In Business Analysis

Launching the BCS International Diploma In Business Analysis News

Business Change Academy are excited to be launching the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis in South Africa. This globally accredited and prestigious award is more than a seal of approval, it’s the industry-recognised certification that truly demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities of an effective Business Analyst.

Business Change Academy’s goal in bringing this business analysis course programme to South Africa is to produce knowledgeable, skilled and capable business analysts of the standard that are needed to meet the demands of modern business.

“Merely conforming to the legislative landscape of the South African education and training environment, and creating courses and content to meet those standards, does not produce the calibre of business analysis professional required by organisations today,” says Joe Newbert, MD of Business Change Academy.

The BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis provides a professional qualification for business analysts. It sets the standard by which business analysts can be assessed, and is aimed at business and IT professionals who wish to demonstrate that they have a detailed understanding of business analysis best practice and competency in range of skills and techniques.

According to Newbert, the vision to launch this internationally recognised business analysis programme to the South African market is not only a a first-of-its-kind, but it turns traditional business analysis training on its head.

“The curriculum is designed to offer flexibility to develop skills in the key areas that are relevant to both the individual and the organisation — the structure of which enables delegates to choose the modules, the sequence and the timing of the courses to match their career path.”

How do I get the diploma?

To achieve the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis certification, candidates must pass four one-hour written examinations on a number of business analysis topics, each of which leads to a certificate which has value in its own right.

To convert their set of certificates into the full Diploma, candidates then attend an interview with two BCS examiners to confirm their technical, business and interpersonal competencies.

What modules do I need?

The certificates can be gained in any order, comprising of two core modules, one knowledge module and one practitioner module:

Core modules – you must pass both of these:

Knowledge based modules – you must pass one of these:

Practitioner modules – you must pass one of these:

The modules delegates choose, for example, business versus technical, will depend on background, situation and preference, what their organisation requires, the nature of their current role and their future career aspirations.

Putting Strategic Business Analysis Theory Into Practice

Putting Strategic Business Analysis Theory Into Practice News

Revealing that Business Change Academy’s Business Analysis Practice course principles are helping her clients to better consider the holistic picture of their business strategy, Jeanette Venter, Project Manager at Aurecon, is positively guiding her key business stakeholders to make the right project decisions when moving forward.

“While facilitating a workshop to unpack detailed requirements with my client — who has high-interest and high-influence — I drew the POPIT model on the whiteboard, from the learnings I acquired on BCMG’s Business Analysis Practice course.

Referring to each element of POPIT, I highlighted to the project team the need to ensure that the IT solution works within the bigger environment, and was able to ask pertinent questions regarding the organisational context, processes impacted and people affected,” says Jeanette.

This approach to managing project stakeholders helped Jeanette make a breakthrough, as towards the end of the workshop, another key stakeholder requested sessions with end-users to discuss their perspective.

“In my role I always try to maintain that the ‘client is always right’, meaning at times I need to subtly influence them.

The techniques I learnt on BCMG’s training helped me achieve what was needed — my client began to recognise the other stakeholders situations. Not just by deriving new requirements, but also by their willingness to understand the change’s overall operational feasibility,” says Jeanette.

The typical disconnects between different stakeholder perspectives can leave organisational disconnects between strategy and tactics, which ultimately cause fundamental problems with the implementation of business system changes.

Jeanette shares that “Resistance to change is one of the biggest challenges we face, and it is a significant obstacle to overcome. We are the ‘middle man’, having to balance the business needs and keeping the client happy, whilst understanding the end user’s challenges and managing their frustrations. And it’s our job to close that gap.”

Not only did Jeanette put the strategic business analysis theory into practice, she was also able to use the outputs from the workshop create quality project deliverables and expedite project delivery. “In addition to POPIT, we also drew the high-level business processes on the whiteboard, which I later formalised in Visio, and we then workshopped them again a second time round to ensure understanding and agree that we were making the right key decisions’” says Jeanette.

Jeanette found the course content extremely relevant, and believes that any project manager or business analyst involved in business systems projects will benefit from the training. She says,

Many projects are typically considered to be IT projects, but realising the true implications for the business environment goes a long way to making everybody happy!”

You can read more about Jeanette’s training experience here and learn more about the Certificate in Business Analysis Practice here, which leads to the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis.

Inter-View Report To Step Aside During 2018

Inter-View Report To Step Aside During 2018 News

It’s never an easy decision to postpone an annual industry publication, especially when it is such an anticipated feature on the business analysis calendar, but if you have been waiting for the survey opening and community insights from the much anticipated Inter-View Report in 2018 sadly you’ll have to curb your enthusiasm until 2019.

In a year that has seen incredible growth for Business Change Academy, the company that both publishes the report and provides training in business analysis, had to make a tough choice with regard to where to deploy their resources to make the biggest difference in the long term.

Inter-View Report Founder, Joe Newbert, stated:

“Having established itself as an industry go-to magazine, and knowing the meaningful benefits Inter-View provides subscribers, the decision for the Inter-View Report to step aside during 2018 was not one we took lightly. It was a tough call.”

BCMG Academy carefully considered how to best focus to meet the growing demand for their business analysis short courses, especially with their new flagship International Diploma in Business Analysis launching in May 2018.

“We are delighted to see the steady rate at which our courses are being adopted by organisations, as the preferred means to enhance their internal skills and make a valuable impact. And with our growing reputation, the trend is that the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis is set to become the de facto business analysis qualification in South Africa.”

The Inter-View Report will be back again next year, and as we move closer to the end of the year the team will begin the hard work to bring readers another round of meaningful insights that focus on the business analysis trends and issues which are shaping the state of project delivery world-wide.
