What Faiek Sonday Did to Transform His Business Analyst Habits

“Being a ‘technique-driven’ business analyst, rather than being driven (mad) by templates, means I’m ready to tackle anything.”

– Faiek Sonday

While working towards his International Diploma in Business Analysis, Faiek Sonday set himself the goal to adapt and polish his approach to business analysis.

The Challenge

Taking many years of solid business analyst experience to the next level

Having passed two modules previously — Business Analysis Practice and Modelling Business Processes — Faiek was back with us to complete his final two qualifying courses towards the International Diploma in Business Analysis.

I’m excited to be back at the Academy and take these next steps towards my Diploma. And to keep-on upskilling and soak-up insights that shift what I can do in the business analysis space.

For this next shift, Faiek set himself two key objectives: a) to better understand pre-project analysis to help his clients with their thinking, and b) to produce a set of ‘good requirements’ at the end of it all.

The Solution

Cementing the breadth, depth, and strength of business analysis into daily habits

At the heart of the Bootcamp is a personal journey, and Faiek settled on consolidating the end-to-end possibilities of the role with the Foundation in Business Analysis and then getting stuck into the nitty-gritty detail of Requirements Engineering.

If my experience has taught me anything it’s that there is no cookie-cutter approach to business analysis, and the freedom of this programme allowed me to choose my own path – one that meets me where I am at.

A big take-away for Faiek was the requirements catalogue, which now threads through everything he does — “I use it (almost) daily to stay focused” — as it supports him in evolving requirements from concept all the way through to resolution.

The Result

A refined set of business analysis skills with the polish to put them to work

Now set with a range of go-to techniques that add polish to his style, Faiek’s producing better quality and more concise deliverables from his analysis work while consulting across the business analyst spectrum from strategy through to benefits.

“Being a ‘technique-driven’ business analyst, rather than being driven (mad) by templates, means I’m ready to tackle anything.”

With the blueprint for technique-driven analysis firmly ingrained in Faieks’ habits, he says he’s discovered that he’s able to adapt to every situation no matter the project’s approach, roles, and deliverables – “I can change tack, no matter the context”.

The Word

The training is not just valuable, it’s essential for those practicing in the business analysis field

While working towards his International Diploma in Business Analysis, Faiek Sonday set himself the goal to adapt and polish his approach to business analysis.

Harold Booysen Makes Immediate Impact and Gets Paid Back 100%

“It was wonderful to receive this acknowledgment from my organisation for the immediate difference I’d made.”

– Harold Booysen

Harold needed a qualification to drive his progression along the path of pioneering business models and processes that will add value to his stakeholders.

The Challenge

Pioneering new business models and processes in the public sector to give more customer value

Harold Booysen works at National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBC) as a Regional Manager.

Harold is guiding his organisation with the implementation of new business models and redesigned business processes, that will help all NCS stakeholders in the various spheres of their operations.

I am involved with or responsible for pioneering all new processes, but I need a qualification to assist me further in progressing on this path.

A big part of his role requires sensitive stakeholder management, and Harold was especially looking for an array of techniques to help people with change in this strong environment.

The Solution

A broad set of frameworks and techniques aimed at facilitating stakeholder perspectives

With a background in Industrial Psychology and Labour Law, Harold was one of those people who are performing business analysis without being aware of it.

So when Harold hit the internet to find suitable training he knew what he needed yet he wasn’t quite sure how to find it – but when his search landed on the Business Change Academy and he saw ‘The Business Analyst Bootcamp – Process Track’ Harold knew he’d found his answer.

The programme had all the elements I was looking for, I was able to exclude the parts I didn’t need, and when speaking to Joe on the telephone about it all it was clear that I was in great hands.

On day 3 Harold felt that he’d already learned enough – “it’s blown my mind” – yet the remainder of the programme cemented everything that had been introduced by that point in such a way that he could go back to NBC, roll up his sleeves and make a positive impact straight away.

The Result

Employer reimburses training fees and the implementation of a new business model

Harold’s happy, and he has good reason to be – two-fold.

Like many of our participants, Harold applied learnings from each day to his work that evening. And, just a few days in, his employers were so impressed with the results, and as he had funded himself, they offered to reimburse his training fees 100%.

It was wonderful to receive this acknowledgment from my organisation for the immediate difference I’d made.

And since, through Harold’s efforts, his organisation “is able to see the light” and he’s having major success running with a new business model for the organisation that will be implemented in 2020.

The Word

Don’t rest on what you already know and seek new experiences to discover what you don’t

Harold needed a qualification to drive his progression along the path of pioneering business models and processes that will add value to his stakeholders.

How Arlene Cloete Is Shaping Her Destiny in R28 Billion Retailer

“It’s catapulted my career because I’m now tackling business analysis with newly found confidence and bona fide competence!”

– Arlene Cloete

Arlene’s driving motivation was to refine her skills by complementing her past experience with fresh learnings for the next step in her business analyst career.

The Challenge

Complementing and enhancing existing business analysis skillset for a new career challenge

On 08 April 2019, Arlene Cloete started a new job at a R28 billion retailer where she’d be engaging across numerous product channels and having to influence people over multiple organisation levels, including some very senior stakeholders.

The role required Arlene to be able to translate business-wide needs (across 28 brands) into “brilliant and succinct requirements”. And she’d be working closely with an established development team who needed to move quickly but preferred a more paperless approach.

I need to get the maximum out of any and all project-related/ business analysis interactions. While my role was more ‘IT’ Business Analyst before – it now has a strong ‘Business’ component to it.

And while it is easy for Arlene to connect with people and build rapport quite quickly, she knew that her stakeholder engagement, modelling skills, and requirements documentation needed to be sharpened to meet this new challenge.

The Solution

Navigating the end-to-end business analysis ‘value stream’ to deliver a meaningful contribution

When Arlene saw the Business Change Academy’s training programme it ticked all the boxes for her right away.

Covering everything from strategy definition, through business processes and requirements definition, to benefits realisation – with stakeholder engagement firmly at its heart – The Business Analyst Bootcamp™ ‘Process Track’ was exactly what was needed.

Previously I felt lost as I was not sure ‘what applies, when’ or ‘how it fits and hangs together’. Business Change Academy’s training pulled it all together for me – into a semblance of sanity!

With this new appreciation of the business analysis ‘value stream’, Arlene was able to go back to the organisation and orchestrate what the end-to-end contribution looks like for her in her role and context.

And she says it’s having an immediate impact – as she’s able to “extract maximum value” while engaging with stakeholders because she knows “the right techniques to apply whilst thinking on my feet!”

The Result

Acquiring an internationally recognised qualification catapults belief to the next level

Following The Business Analyst Bootcamp™, and armed with business modelling, investment appraisal, use case and ‘triple backlog’ techniques, Arlene was immediately able to add more value and saw swift returns.

It’s catapulted my career because I’m now tackling the role with newly found confidence and bona fide competence!

With “no more quivering in my voice or false courage” Arlene has found that her contribution is taken more seriously on projects and that she’s now in control of her destiny, in terms of the role she plays today and achieving her career aspirations of tomorrow.

The Word

Exceptional training for people who are serious about formalising their business analysis expertise

Arlene’s driving motivation was to refine her business analysis skills by complementing her past experience with fresh learnings for the next step in her business analyst career.
