Overall I have about 10 years experience in business analysis, and currently hold the position of Business Analyst Team Lead at Derivco.

Why did you decide to take the business analysis practice course?

To understand and learn how a business analyst can start making a strategic impact at the Senior Management level.

The tools and techniques showcased on the course will definitely help me to kick-off projects by getting a proper understanding of, and how to apply, the business strategy.

I liked the PESTLE analysis framework — the way it’s presented in the course was clear and simple, and easily applied in the work situation, where we are constantly responding to the environment as part of business analysis.

What did you enjoy most about the BCMG training experience?

The interactive course content and the group exercises mostly, where we worked together on responding to the case study scenarios.

I’d recommend it to them, as there are some really useful techniques worth learning.

In the spirit of ‘keep growing’, what would you like to learn next?

Not sure at this stage, though I’ll definitely be taking a look at the other business analysis courses available in future.

Giving Business Analysts The Competitive Edge

Giving Business Analysts The Competitive Edge News

Michelle van Kesteren, Operations Manager, attended Business Change Academy’s Business Analysis Practice course with a view to assessing the training course for the business consulting team, and here she shares her experience of how the programme is giving business analysts the competitive edge by steering them to become less of a documenter and more of a thinker.

Coming into the course I was expecting the typical business analysis content to be covered, which in theory is great to know, but in reality one often does not get to actually put into practice what you’ve learnt.

And, admittedly, I came in with a closed mind, thinking, I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, I’ll just come here to observe and assess. But, boy, was I wrong and very pleasantly surprised!,” says Michelle.

Michelle is of the opinion that:

  1. the unfortunate perception of a Business Analyst is of someone who churns out documentation, but that
  2. the real skill that differentiates good business analysts from great business analysts is the way they think about a problem and engage with their stakeholders to truly uncover the root cause, as well as resolve conflicting views.

While writing good documentation is a skill, it can be learnt. But being able to think holistically and conceptually about a problem, and knowing the right questions to ask, is more difficult to teach,” Michelle says.

Which starts to explain what is giving Business Change Academy’s business analysis courses the sharp-edge over its competitors, and why they are fast becoming the training provider of choice for organisations.

The course content is designed to teach business analysis techniques which assist in helping business analysts to really think about the problem, apply their minds and break it down in simple, meaningful, visual ways to really ensure that they are indeed solving the right problem, in collaboration with their stakeholders.

Business Change Academy’s shift from template-driven documentation to technique-driven analysis is wonderfully refreshing, and completely different from what the other training providers are offering,” says Michelle.

Michelle believes the role of the business analyst has evolved significantly over the years. “However, most training providers and more so academic institutions have failed to evolve their content as well. This has left a gap in the industry, and as a result we have more “documenters” than “real thinkers”.

The International Diploma in Business Analysis is the key differentiator for any business analyst looking for relevant, fresh content to give them a competitive edge.

It certainly has the potential to reduce the gap in the industry, and transform the way business analysts think about their role and how they add value to their organisation,” she says.

Michelle has assurance that Business Change Academy is the right training company with the right training programme to up-skill Saratoga’s team of business consultants. Of real significance is the training curriculum delivered by Business Change Academy — one that sets it apart from other offerings in the market.

The content is fresh, it is internationally recognised and the journey to getting the Diploma can be designed by the individual,” she remarks.

As the Business Consulting Operations Manager at Saratoga, Michelle believes it is absolutely critical that their Business Consultants offer a differentiated service and experience to their clients, and she feels assured Business Change Academy are helping them to achieve this.

Meet Paulo Conde | Business Analysis Practice Delegate

Paulo Conde Business Analysis Practice BCMG Difference

Paulo Conde, Senior Business Analyst at Derivco, shares his training experience having recently completed the Business Analysis Practice course.

On the training Paulo learnt how to consider different perspectives and really step into his stakeholders shoes, and has gained expertise on how to best approach strategic business analysis from which he is making a meaningful impact.

Here’s what Paulo had to say about his training experience:

Tell us a bit about yourself, Paulo.

I’m a mountain biker trapped inside a Business Analyst’s body!

By day I am a Senior Business Analyst at Derivco, with more than 10 years business analysis experience. By night I’m a husband, father, activist, entrepreneur and active IIBA volunteer with a passion for making the world a better place.

In the little spare time that I have, I’m an avid mountain biker, trail runner and guitarist.

Why did you decide to take the business analysis practice course?

I took the course to get a better understanding of how Business Analysts can play a part in strategic initiatives, specifically with the intention of establishing a strategic business analysis role in Derivco.

How will the course help you in your career?

The course equipped me with the knowledge on how best to approach strategic business analysis and make a meaningful impact, in a logical manner.

What’s most valuable, is that it’s given me hands-on knowledge of what strategic business analysis is all about and how we as Business Analysts can play a fundamental role in it.

And it’s given me some powerful tools to start making a difference in my day-to-day work.

What was your biggest learning – did you have an AHA! Moment?

There are lots to choose from, but two really stood out for me:

  1. The POPIT model — because often we neglect people and the organisation, and focus mainly on the IT and process side of things. In many cases, the issues are far wider than we imagine.
  2. That we need to get into stakeholder’s shoes, and not just impose our views on them – as highlighted by a CATWOE analysis.

What did you enjoy most about the BCMG training experience?

Everything — it was spot on.

The trainer powered through tons of well-crafted content in a way that kept the course engaging and fun.

It was really great to actually get stuck into lots of practical examples with the rest of the attendees – it’s not the kind of course where you sit back and listen for hours on end.

What would you tell someone who is considering doing this course?

Definitely do it — I genuinely believe that you can’t do proper strategic business analysis without having these tools.

In the spirit of ‘keep growing’, what would you like to learn next?

I’ll see what’s on offer in terms of courses, but the focus for now is getting practical experience and know-how, at Derivco, using the knowledge I’ve learnt.

Paulo took the steps to learn how to approach strategic business analysis and is making a meaningful impact. Are you ready to gear up? Find out more about the Business Analysis Practice course here.
